How to use GateShare

A step by step guide for sellers. Tap a heading to open it.

New here? Start with the first three, in order. Everything else is there for when you need it.

What the pins on the map mean. A dot with a price is a stall, and the price is the cheapest thing there. A green car is a drop off: one seller somewhere for a while, not their usual gate. A red and white tent is a market, and the number beside it is how many stalls are going. A yellow balloon is a community event: a garage sale, a school fair, a working bee, something the district is welcome at rather than something to buy from. A wooden table is a temporary stall: somebody selling from a gate that is not their usual one for a few days, and it is the only pin on the map that does not mean "here, exactly", because it is at a house. The same key sits under the map in the app.

1. What a "stall" is (it doesn't have to be a real one)

On GateShare, your stall is just your seller page. It holds everything you sell, and it puts you on the map. You need one even to sell a single thing.

It doesn't have to be an actual stall. No sign, no table, no honesty box, not even a gate. Your "stall" is simply wherever a buyer collects from, for example:

You don't need a business, and it doesn't have to be regular. One spare box of lemons is enough.

Each thing you sell goes inside your stall as an item. So: make your stall once, then add items to it.
2. How to make your stall

First, join GateShare (it's free) and confirm your email with the code we send you. Check your junk folder if it doesn't arrive in a minute or two.

  1. Tap You at the bottom of the screen, then Selling.
  2. Tap Start your stall.
  3. Give it a name and your rough area, like the name of your town or road. That's all buyers see on the map.
  4. Find your address on the map. Your exact address stays private (see section 7).
  5. Choose how you'll be paid: cash at the gate, card in GateShare, or both. You can change this later.
  6. Press the button to create it. Your stall is live straight away.

The first time you sell, GateShare also texts a code to your mobile to confirm it's a real New Zealand number. It only happens once.

One stall per person and per property. If two people at the same address genuinely sell different things, the app lets you ask us about it.
3. How to add your first item

Right after you make your stall, the Add an item form opens by itself. Any other time: You then Selling then ➕ Add an item.

  1. Choose what kind of thing it is first. Eggs, baking, firewood, plants and so on. This matters, because it decides which questions you're asked.
  2. Give it a name and a price. Add a photo if you can. Even a quick phone snap sells far better than none.
  3. Say how many you have, if you like, and add a short note.
  4. Tick the "I confirm…" boxes at the bottom. These are the plain English rules for that kind of item, like food safety for baking or the paperwork for animals. Every box must be ticked.
  5. Say when a buyer can collect it. It's there now means anyone can buy it and come and get it without asking you first, so only pick that if somebody could turn up within the hour and it would be waiting. By arrangement means you confirm each order and sort a time.
  6. Press Add to stall.
A live animal is always by arrangement, and GateShare does not offer the other choice on sheep, cattle, pigs, deer, horses, alpacas, working dogs or poultry. You need to be there to hand the animal over, do the paperwork and meet the buyer. Fertile eggs are not a live animal, so those are up to you.
If it doesn't save, an orange box appears right above the button saying exactly what's missing. Fix that one thing and press again. Everything you typed is still there.

To share one listing rather than your whole stall, open it and tap ↗ Share this listing. Whoever you send it to lands on that one thing, with its photo on the card, and your stall is one tap away.

On the Free plan, one priced item can be live at a time. Free, koha and swap items never count, so list as many of those as you like.

6. When you get an order

You'll hear about it three ways:

Want to see one first? In Selling, the Getting started list has a 🔔 Send me a test button. It sends you exactly what an order sends.

In 📦 Orders you can choose whether you check each order before it goes ahead, and how soon buyers should collect. Once an order is confirmed, the buyer gets your address and your "how to find us" notes. Nobody else does.

7. Keeping your address private

Your exact address is never shown on the map. The pin buyers see is moved up to about 500 metres from your house, in a random direction, on purpose. So it will look a bit off. That's the point.

Your real address and directions go only to a buyer whose order is confirmed.

8. Drop offs and meeting buyers

GateShare doesn't do couriers or shipping. But plenty of sellers drop things off, or meet buyers in town.

To tell buyers, open 📍 Where buyers collect and add a drop offs note, for example "in town Tuesdays and Fridays". Then sort the details with each buyer in the app's messages.

9. Taking a break

Season over, or going away? Open ⏸️ Pause my stall. It takes your stall off the map. Nothing is lost, and one tap brings it back.

10. Signing in, and a forgotten password

Tap Sign in or join in the menu, then put in your email address and password.

11. The plans, and what each one gives you

Buying on GateShare is always free. The plans are for selling, and GateShare takes no commission on anything you sell, on any plan.

Your plan is shown at the top of Account & billing. If you ever move to a smaller plan, nothing is deleted.

12. Help us spread the word

Flyers: the menu has 📣 Spread the word, with posters and flyers to print for a notice board, a school newsletter or the dairy window.

Haul of the Week: been round the roadside stalls? Menu, 🏆 Send us your haul. One each week wins a prize.

13. Still stuck?

Tap 🛟 Help in the app menu, or email hello@gateshare.co.nz. A real person reads every message. A screenshot of what you can see helps us help you fastest.
